Don’t you love how clear God is with us? He is talking to the men in Malachi because apparently their culture was rampant with divorce and married men were unfaithful to wives of their youth. I am sure you can think of many men you know who after years of marriage left their wife for another woman. Of course, women do this too, but here the Lord is calling out the men because they seem to be more challenged in this area. Remember, our Abba loves every hair on our head, but He is also a God of justice and plainly tells unfaithful spouses He no longer pays attention to their offerings and prayers to Him. Ouch.
Now with that being said, Abba’s grace is greater than any sin we can commit so, of course, when the repentant sinner asks for forgiveness, he or she is fully forgiven and restored to their Abba. The shocking point of this passage is how many Christians today like the believers in Malachi are not repentant of their unfaithfulness. I can’t tell you how many times my husband and I have tried to encourage husbands to return to their families and wives after being unfaithful only to hear them rationalize their sins. Abba does not listen to our human rationalizations and attempts to compromise His word; in fact, as this passage tells us, He just stops listening to us all together.
Verses 15-16 are ancient words of wisdom, not often heeded in our present day culture.
Didn’t the Lord make you one with your wife? In body and spirit you are his. And what does he want? Godly children from your union. So guard your heart; remain loyal to the wife of your youth. “For I hate divorce! says the Lord, the God of Israel. “To divorce your wife is to overwhelm her with cruelty,” says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. “So guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife.”
In Genesis 2:20-25 Abba acknowledged Adam was lonely and needed a suitable companion. Who was “suitable”? The Lord’s answer for Adam was a woman. And Abba went on to explain his invention of marriage or “divine institution of marriage” would mean that a man would leave his parents and join his wife, and the two would be united as one and have sex together and feel no shame.
Did you know the Hebrew word for wife cannot mean anything other than a woman?
Did you know the Hebrew words for man and wife in Scripture are always singular and do not leave room for multiples? Yes, our spiritual ancestors disobeyed God’s will just like we do and married multiple women, but how did that work out for them?
Our culture wants to redefine sacred institutions like marriage. As Romans 8:7 (ERV) says, anyone whose thinking is controlled by their sinful self is against God. They refuse to obey God’s law.
I know it is hard to stand against popular opinion, but if we Christians don’t speak the truth in love then everything we hold sacred and true will come under assault as we certainly see today.
Malachi 2:17 (ERV) You have taught wrong things, and it makes the Lord very sad. People were doing evil things, but you said that this pleased the Lord and that he accepted those things. And you taught that God does not punish people for the evil they do.
I don’t want to be responsible before God for presenting Him falsely and I know you don’t either. Do you go weak when the topic of marriage comes up?
God knows I have plenty of times so let’s pray for opportunities to share His sacred, good, healthy ways wrapped in love and grace; Abba will give you and me the courage and the words we need if we ask Him.
