What is the definition of a Christian country? First, let’s define what a Christian believes since there seems to be much confusion these days. Hmm, could this possibly have something to do with us being a post-Christian nation if we don’t even know what being a Christian means? The word Christian means “follower of Christ”.
Being a Christian means that you are changed on the inside because you are born again. Jesus said in John 3 to Nicodemas, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.” You won’t change overnight; however, something new did happen to you, and if you are a Christian over time there should be changes in your life.
Your thinking and your heart change because it now has the very presence of God. The things you used to be comfortable hearing, seeing, saying and participating in feel uncomfortable and wrong to you now.
Barna conducted a survey to determine the percentage of Christians in America. Barna was not looking for the “Yea, I am an American; therefore, I am a Christian”. As stated by the Barna Group, ‘the survey was looking for true followers of Christ based on the following criteria for a biblical worldview:
- "believing that absolute moral truth exists";
- the Bible is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches;
- Satan is considered to be a real being or force, not merely symbolic;
- a person cannot earn their way into Heaven by trying to be good or do good works;
- Jesus Christ lived a sinless life on earth;
- and God is the all-knowing, all-powerful creator of the world who still rules the universe today."
A.W. Tozer said, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us. This is true not only of the individual Christian, but of the company of Christians that composes the Church. Always the most revealing thing about the Church is her idea of God.” If the American church’s idea of God is that we can take what we like from His God-breathed words and leave behind what we don’t like or what the cultures disagrees with, then our country is in a downward, malnourished spiritual state.
What we think about God and His Word is everything; it is the compass that directs our life and our decisions. His ways and words are the anchor that keeps us from drifting into troubled, dangerous waters. We Christians are the hope for America. History always repeats itself and every superpower in history fell when moral rot infested the land. Christians keep a society nourished, healthy and on the right course.
Consider what is happening in America because Christians are either malnourished or simply won’t use their voice. Just one generation ago children started their day at school in prayer. Today the government not only does not allow prayer, but is aggressively working to remove any mention of God Almighty! Saying the Pledge of Allegiance has even come under attack because of the phrase, “One nation under God”.
And what about Christmas; a national holy day (holiday) celebrated throughout our land? It too has become controversial; simply saying “Merry Christmas” can cause someone to get fired in some places! And in our public schools which we pay for with our money, well heaven forbid should the children sing “Silent Night” or “We Three Kings” instead of some silly song like “Grandma Got Ran Over By a Reindeer”. Oh and the “Christmas Program” must of course be referred to as the “Winter Program”. All these changes in just one generation!
If we were still a Christian nation, we would not have elected officials who openly shake their fist at God’s Ways by pushing immoral laws on us. Sadly, however, our political leaders only reflect the culture that put them in office.
We Americans used to define success as someone who had character and took care of their families and their communities. Have you watched the news lately? Have you been to the movies lately or listened to pop culture music? They are preaching a whole new message, and it goes like this, “Get what is yours because you deserve it.” No matter how immoral the acts, if it feels good to you do it. Our youth are told at every turn there are no truths or absolute morals; do what feels right the world is all about “me”.
My fellow Christian you are the hope for America. Will you ask God to ignite the flicker burning inside you to know Him and love Him into an all-consuming fire? Will you implore the Lord to remember America was founded as “One Nation under God” and to lead us back to living as a nation under God?
God Bless America! God Bless American Again!
