I can hear you saying that is too good to be true. I can hear you saying I have tried that before and it didn’t work for me. I go to church and I attend bible study and I am still weary deep within my soul. Is it possible dear one who is adored and loved beyond measure by your Creator, that you have gone to church, but are not experiencing personal encounters with Jesus? Is it possible that you hear religion taught, but you are not hearing the Holy Spirit of Jesus speak to your soul? Is it possible the eyes of your heart are not open to Him? His invitation is so clear, yet we humans muddy it with our ideas and our ways. He simply says, "Come to Me”. Jesus is the solution for weariness of the soul. Go to Him. Admit you have soul secrets you are not dealing with and they are exhausting you. He already knows what they are. He wants to be intimately involved with you; involved in every detail of your past, present and future. I love this definition of intimacy; in to me see. My daddy used to teach me that Jesus is the perfect gentleman and would never force His involvement in my life. He patiently waits everyday for the invitation to help, guide, heal, restore, provide and tend to me.
Let’s unpack this passage in Matthew 11 just a bit more. Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”
Jesus is always inviting and asking us to “come to Him”. He NEVER tells us to “go away”. He extends an open invitation 24/7 for us to run into His arms for our every need. Why don’t we? I think we get sidetracked into thinking a certain ministry will fulfill us or someone else will fulfill us or some thing will give us satisfaction and nothing ever really does.
We also don’t feel worthy of God’s attention, especially since we know how dark our hearts can be at times. We hesitate and instead of running to Him we run everywhere else. This is a beautiful truth to download straight into your heart~ having an intimate relationship with Jesus is not a matter of my worthiness but of my willingness. He is already in our hearts if we have invited Him to be our Lord and Savior and He waits every moment for us to connect with Him. There is nothing that would keep Him away. Absolutely nothing, including my unworthy feelings, because He is Truth and He says I matter to Him, I belong to Him and He cares about me.
Did you catch what Jesus said? He said take MY yoke. Our yokes are too much for us to bear. We become easily overwhelmed, afraid, depressed, anxious and burdened. Jesus said My yoke is easy and the burden will be light. Why, because He bears it with me. I am not alone; not ever. Yes, many burdens in this world appear to be unbearable, but when we yoke up with Jesus He takes a big load off our shoulders!
When ancient farmers trained an animal like an ox to plow the fields the new, younger, untrained ox was yoked to an experienced, older ox. The yokes in ancient Palestine were made of wood and were tailored to fit the individual ox’s neck. The yoke was felt by the ox, but never cut into his neck. With the stronger more experienced ox carrying a great deal of the burden the younger ox could learn how to plow without being overly burdened.
Don’t you love that visual? Jesus is ever so patient, carrying my burdens with me and carrying a greater portion of the load, while patiently teaching me how to plow the fields of my life. This makes so much sense to me. My heaviest burdens are for my 2 kids’ futures, but the truth is He cares far more about them than my human heart ever could!
Friend, do you feel as though your yoke in life is too difficult for you? Are you over-burdened? If so, is it possible that your yoke is not His yoke on your back? Is it possible that you are not plowing through life with Him tightly connected to your side? Jesus said it plainly: My yoke is easy and My burden is light. He has your tailored made yoke waiting. Where are you taking off down the field without Him? Don’t forget to invite Him along; He stands waiting for you.
