The bible reveals many different names of God, but my very favorite name to describe Him is Abba Father. The word Abba is Aramaic and closely translates as “Daddy.' I love this name for God because it implies intimacy and closeness. A well-meaning older gentleman shared with me that he didn’t like how I refer to God as Abba so often in Nourishments. He told me God is Holy and Righteous and should be revered. I told him I could not agree more, but as His child, God is also my Abba. Abba is the safe place I run to when I am seeking protection, direction, guidance, comfort and provision. I picture a huge throne with Abba God sitting there listening to me as I pour out my heart and Jesus sitting at His right hand interceding on my behalf.
It is interesting to note the Qur'an teaches that Allah is the Mighty and Most Holy but does not mention Allah in an intimate daddy-type relationship as in Christianity.
The book of Matthew alone refers to God as our Father 43 times and Jesus taught us to pray to our Father. However, although we are all made in His image and from His hand, we are not all His children as John 1:12-13 reminds us: But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God. They are reborn—not with a physical birth resulting from human passion or plan, but a birth that comes from God. We do not have the privilege of calling upon Abba until we have believed and accepted Him as our Savior and Lord.
Unlike earthly daddies, Abba is the perfect Daddy in every way. My life changed when I embraced my Abba, and it can change your life too. I believe He is everything He says He is and that I can confidently go before His mighty throne of grace and truth with boldness and assurance knowing He will always be there for me. I am no longer His enemy, but part of His family and because I am in His family He deals with me differently than He deals with “the world”.
Abba Father will never leave me nor forsake me. He always forgives and moves forward with me. He knows exactly how to discipline me with the goal of correcting behavior that is not good for me. I love Him because He is always there for me when I seek His guidance; He is not a moody Father nor is He an elusive Father. He wants to share His amazing plans with me and knows the perfect time to share details when I am developmentally ready to handle those details.
The challenging part for me is that I can’t physically see Him, touch Him, or hear Him. However, I believe Abba when he says someday not far away when I am with Him for all eternity I will see Him as He really is and oh what a day that will be!
Abba Father loves you more than you can imagine. If you are His child, you belong to Him and bear His family name. Will you seek Him with confidence mixed with respect, visualizing the gentle, caring, attentive and perfect Father He is to you?
Psalm 138:8 (NLT) The Lord will work out his plans for my life—for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever. Don’t abandon me, for you made me.
Isaiah 30:15, 18 (NLT) This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “Only in returning to me and resting in me will you be saved. In quietness and confidence is your strength. But you would have none of it . . . So the Lord must wait for you to come to him so he can show you his love and compassion. For the Lord is a faithful God.
Go to the Lord with your questions regarding your future and any decisions you need to make. Visualize yourself placing all your questions at the foot of His throne. Visualize yourself committing your life to His will and His ways. Sit with Him and thank Him for His amazing Grace in your life and His unending Mercies.
Abba God loves you so much; He knit you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm, 139:13). He created you with His divine imprint. You are made in His image (Genesis 1:27). You are the twinkle in His eye. Allow His Love to soothe your inner being like a calming balm.
Do you think Abba will not direct you if you seek His will? Be patient and wait for His clear nudging. When the time is right, He will guide you and you will know it is time to move forward. Since the moments in which you were being knit together, He has known the plans He has for you. His faithful love only waits for you to ask.
He has never and will never abandon the work of His hands— You!
But have you abandoned Him in any area of your life?
